ASTM A263 Properties (Chem., Mech. & Rankings)

In this post I'll talk about and give details about ASTM A263. First let's describe it and then have a look at its material's properties.

What is ASTM A263?

ASTM A263 is a Specification for Stainless Chromium Steel-Clad Plate.

Steel Plates, Sheets, and Strip for Pressure Vessels

Scope

This specification covers plate of a carbon steel or low-alloy steel base to which is integrally and continuously bonded on one or both sides a layer of stainless chromium steel. The material is generally intended for pressure vessel use.

Ok let's start with ASTM A263 chemical composition.

Chemical Composition

Alloy Cladding Metal

Shall conform to the requirements as to chemical composition prescribed for the respective chromium steel in Specification A240/A240M.

Base Metal

The base metal shall be carbon steel or low-alloy steel conforming to the ASTM specifications for steels for pressure vessels or other as agreed by the purchaser and the manufacturer.

Yield Strength

40 ksi (275 MPa) min

70 ksi (485 MPa) min

Density

7480 - 8000 kg/m3 (around 7.9 g/cm3 or 0.285 lb/in3).

180 GPa (26107 ksi) - 210GPa (30458 ksi).

Poisson's Ratio

Usually around 0.26 – 0.31.
