What is 'abutment' 🧑‍🔧

In this article, I'd like to explain "What is 'abutment'". Let's characterize it and answer some popular questions.

A short answer to this question is…

A surface or mass provided to withstand thrust; for example, end supports of an arch or a bridge.

An abutment is the substructure at the ends of a bridge span or dam supporting its superstructure.

Single-span bridges have abutment at each end which provide vertical and lateral support for the span, as well as acting as retaining walls to resist lateral movement of the earthen fill of the bridge approach.

Multi-span bridges require piers to support ends of spans unsupported by abutment.

Dam abutment are generally the sides of a valley or gorge, but may be artificial in order to support arc.

Let’s start by reviewing a few questions people ask:

'abutment'

What are the abutment of a bridge...

The abutment also support the bearing devices and the backwalls. Abutments are usually constructed of concrete. There are various types of abutment including wall, stub, integral, and semi-integral. In a bridge, the wing walls are adjacent to the abutment and act as retaining walls.
