- Fusion Zone: Region of the base metal that undergoes fusion during welding. It's a term with little use.
- Fusion Boundary: Region of the welded joint that surrounds the zone that undergoes fusion during welding. Generally used in some impact tests to define the location of removal of specimens.
- Fusion: Passage from solid to liquid state. This transformation takes place with increased heat or thermal energy. During melting, the metal goes through a heating process.
- Solidification: Passage from liquid to solid state. This transformation takes place with the loss of heat. During solidification, the metal undergoes a cooling process.
