Chamfer
It is also a properly prepared groove between two components for a weld. This term is also widely used in other industries, such as mechanics.
There are many tools for sale that may open a chamfer. If you are curious, look for steel pipe beveling machines.
Please note that:
- The words chamfer and bevel can overlap when we're talking about one individual component.
- In cases where there was no chamfer or where there is no bevel, we use may use the expression “straight chamfer” or “no chamfer”.
Purpose and objective
The chamfer is generally used to facilitate access for the electrode or torch for welding.
Chamfer Types
The main types are as follows:
Angle
It is the angle (sum) between the prepared edges of the components. See letter "alpha" in the picture below:
Groove Face
It is the surface of a component located inside the chamfer.
Groove welds
When the weld is performed on a joint that has at least one beveled component, we say it is a groove weld.
Please note that it is also possible to perform angle welds.
Disadvantage
The larger the groove angle, the more weld metal is deposited.
As a result, welding becomes more expensive. We will need more consumables and time to complete the weld.
A small, insufficient or non-existent groove angle can make welding difficult. Or maybe impossible.
Chamfering
Materials are hardly available in the way we would like or specify.
To obtain a chamfer we must cut them. Chamfering is the act of cutting at an angle.
The most common methods for chamfering are:
- Machining;
- Grinding;
- Oxyfuel.

Citation
When you need to include a fact or piece of information in an assignment or essay you should also include where and how you found that piece of information (Chamfer).
That gives credibility to your paper and it is sometimes required in higher education.
To make your life (and citation) easier just copy and paste the information below into your assignment or essay:
Luz, Gelson. What is Chamfer (Types and Disadvantages). Materials Blog. Gelsonluz.com. dd mmmm. yyyy. URL.
Now replace dd, mmmm and yyyy with the day, month, and year you browsed this page. Also replace URL for the actual url of this page. This citation format is based on MLA.
