2022: Specific Gravity of Engine Oil (& Formula, Definition, Infographic)

Definition

The specific gravity of engine oil is the ratio of the density of engine oil to that of a reference substance (Usually water).

This information can be used to tell whether engine oil will float (or sink) if dropped in water (Buoyancy).

Formula

SG = ρengine oil / ρwater

Note: Both densities need to be in the same unit as they will cancel each other and produce SG.
