Density of Water (All Units + Temperature Table + Infographic)

Definition

The density of water is the weight of the water per its volume. Also worth noting that density depends on the temperature (of the water).

Formula

ρ = m / V
  • ρ:  Density
  • m: mass
  • V: Volume

Density vs Specific Weight vs Specific Gravity

I would like to point out that there are conceptual differences between density, specific weight and specific gravity. Follow the link if you want to learn more about these differences.

With that said, this page will provide you the density of water in kg/m³ (SI unit), g/cm³, g/ml, kg/l, lb/ft³, pounds per gallon (and other metric and english units).

Density of Water

The usual value for calculations is 1 gram per cubic centimeter (1 g/cm³). While you can always round the water density to 1, there are more precise values.

At 25 °C (77 °F or room temperature) and 1 atm:

𝛒 = 0.99713 g/cm³
𝛒 = 997.13 kg/m³
𝛒 = 0.99713 g/ml
𝛒 = 997.13 g/L
𝛒 = 0.99713 kg/l
𝛒 = 0.99713 kg/L
𝛒 = 62.2488 lb/ft³
𝛒 = 8.32145 lb/gal

Water Density vs Temperature

Let's say you want to know the density of water at 20 °C or any other temperature between 0 and 100 °C. Just check this temperature table:
